I've chosen Cove Harbour as my first Place to Play because it's one of our family's favourite days out we've had this year, and also to show that this blog won't just be about the more obvious places that we think of when we think about playing with our kids, like a park or soft play or something like that.
Cove Harbour is down the coast from Dunbar and is a gem of a place to visit. Park your car in the small car park at the top of the cliffs and descend the wooden staircase all the way down to this natural harbour that has been in use since the 1600's. Before you do, look out for the recently erected memorial to the fishermen who lost their lives in storms in 1881. I think the figures on the top are excellent in the way they conjure up the fear that the mothers and children must have felt. It's not a long walk, but is quite exciting to do as it involves going through a dark, dark tunnel to get to the pebbley beach. There's lots of scope for pebble collecting, fishing and splashing in the gentle waves that come into the harbour. It's even ideal for swimming in if you're into dipping in the North Sea. If you really can't face the tunnel, there are old harbour walls on the near side to climb and look over and out to sea.
We last visited Cove Harbour on a sunny Summer's day but it has so much to keep you amused that it would even do on a chilly day, if you wrap up warm!
Fantabulous start. Has Isabel signed photo waiver?
